Exhibition Information

Between the eyes is presented by the Stride Gallery, in conjunction with Asian Heritage Month 2006. The +15 exhibit features the work of three visual artists of Asian ancestry, reinterpreting their inherited rituals, customs, symbols and family histories. Using a combination of found objects, altered imagery and photo-based documentation, Woo, Yamamoto and Yee will collaboratively create an installation examining the commonalities between their experiences, growing up as the children of Asian immigrants, on the hyphen of two cultures.

The artistic trio will interrogate these spaces of ‘in-between-ess’ and the dualities inherent within simultaneously existing and negotiating between multiple locations of perceived identities. Between the eyes will further seek to investigate notions of generational divides, imagined homelands and constructed lineages. Recognizing the fertile ground of their hybrid-cultural experiences, the artists will initiate an exploratory examination into what these ideas mean in reference to the individual, the community and the collective.
